Finally there is a new BIOS out! uEFI

I know this probably isn’t the newest news, but hey i get there eventually. And also i haven’t rebuilt my PC in more than a year now so it hasn’t exactly been on the top of my mind, bios’s and such. But here it is, the uEFI Bios in all its glory.

Old Award Bios (we will miss you) :

(i know this is actually the old interface on the new bios, but you get the idea ;) )

Apparently its already being rolled out on some new motherboards, such as this sexy looking board by ASUS, the ASUS Sabertooth P67 TUF. I actually like the plastic coating (or tactical vest as they like to call it) that this board is covered in, looks pimp! Just dont drop any screws down in there when installing it…

You can actually get these boards for under $200 as well which is not bad at all really, or are things just getting cheaper.

Full review of the this board here.

Got my new PSP Go, WPA2 on the PSP Go, is it possible?

Apparently it is not…

So i plugged in my new PSP Go last night, and was ready to download my 10 free games. heres how it all unfolded.

Open PSP Box, Looking good, unit looks awesome great size, etc. Plug in the power adapter, no probs, turn device on. Spend about 10 minutes figuring out how to use the text input to name the device. No worries ;) . Im sure i can get used to it, but dam its a bit too complicated. press X to cycle through a seemingly random amount of letters and then use the R to goto the next letter, i know sounds simple. Not so simple after a few beers.

Then i go, sweet into the PSP Go operating system. Signup to PSN, cool. Your system needs an update. Fair enough. Scan for network access points. Finds my home wireless, Incompatable. Aww, why! Apparently WPA2 is not compatible with PSP Go. Say what? Pfft. Walk into computer room, boot up pc, change router setting to WPA. PSP Go Connects. Yay. Download update, ready to install update, make sure the PSP does not shutdown etc while updating. Then gets to the screen, your battery is not charged enought to apply the update, please wait until the battery has charged enough the installation will automatically continue. Fair enough, put psp upside down in box and go to bed. ;)

So no exciting PSP action for me last night. Ah well wait for tonight to connect and give it a go.

I found a few comments on the PSP Go Connecting to WPA2, apparently it cant be done. Maybe it will support it in a future patch. I guess its no biggie.

On some routers choosing AES only forces WPA2 mode, so you may need to select TKIP+AES when using mixed mode.

I think a lot of the trouble people have setting this stuff up has to do with the way many routers change things you think you have set. For instance, my old router would let you choose the security type, so I set WPA+WPA2 mixed mode. Then on the next panel I could choose encryption type (which was set to TKIP+AES when I chose mixed mode). So I chose AES only, and then it quietly changed the previouos security setting to WPA2 only as well. If I did not double-check everything before saving I would think I was all set with WPA+WPA2 mixed mode with AES, and get confused and frustrated when my PSP would not work.

I used to deal with this kind of stuff daily and it drove me crazy.

I emailed tech support to complain about the items that seemed to be independently selectable that actually forced changes to settings I had already made. I was told that they would pass along my concerns to the firmware team. Thought that would be the end of it, but was surprised later when I received another email telling me that a new firmware was out that addressed several issues, including the one I had brought to their attention. I thought, great, they fixed it and I’ll be able to set things independently, right? Ummm… nope. Their “fix” was to gray out the buttons on the encryption type screen. The buttons are still there, you just can’t click on them. LOL!

I’ve seen this kind of confusing nonsense in pretty much every router brand. I have enough experience that I can always make it work, but I can see how someone not technically inclined could end up banging their head on the wall in frustration. Best advice I can give is to double-check everything before saving, and if it still doesn’t work, update to the latest firmware.

via here

The PSP does not support WPA2. Best security you can use is WPA-PSK (AES). You can set your router to WPA+WPA2 mixed mode and keep using WPA2 on devices that support it.

The PSP is an 802.11b device, so in addition to setting your router to WPA+WPA2 mixed mode, you must also be sure it is set to support wireless “B” devices (many N routers have B support off by default).

The access point I use with my cable broadband is set to B/G/N support and WPA+WPA2 mixed mode. My netbook is using wireless-N with WPA2, my phone is using wireless-G with WPA2, and my PSPgo is using wireless-B with WPA-PSK (AES). They all connect fine. I have a DSL connection too (beta testing a new digital TV service and got 26 megabit Internet along with that). The DSL wireless B/G gateway is also set to WPA+WPA2 mixed mode, and my PSPgo and other devices connect without issue.

There really shouldn’t be any need to use WPA-only mode, and certainly no need to use the old broken WEP security! I use my Go on connections at friend’s homes as well, on several different routers, and they’re all set up the same way (WPA+WPA2 mixed mode). Haven’t had any trouble, other than getting long keys entered correctly with the PSP’s crappy input system.

best small form factor case roundup micro atx

I have been looking into these awesome small form factor cases lately, as im looking to downsize my gigantic server case. I originally bought it as my new (at the time) 460GTX wouldnt fit in the Antec Lanboy case that i had, without some shoe-horn action. And i really wasnt in the mood for that kind of modding. Anyway, it is time to downsize and im really not sure what case i want to get.

For the hardware side of things i was thinking of getting something with an i7 in it and probably about 6 gig of ram. I also have heared good things about the ASUS ROG Rampage III or II GENE (MicroATX) motherboards, for there all in one features.

Motherboard

kruxor img 141212 asus pamp2 3.jpg

Board Specs: (Version II)

  • Intel I7 Processor – LGA 1366

  • EAX 4.0 Support
  • Tuned for Overclocking
  • Onboard Power, Reset, and CMOS Clear Buttons

Board Specs (Version III)

  • CPU: LGA1366 socket Intel® Core™i7 Extreme Edition /Core™i7 Processors Chipset Intel® X58/ICH10R

  • Exclusive features: ROG Connect
  • Game First
  • CPU Level Up
  • MemOK!

(Hmm.. wonder if i can fit a blockquote within another blockquote…(Edit: No it looks kinda not cool.)) Rampage GEN III or R3G takes more of the great features that Rampage Extreme III have a best seller. It features the Intel X58 chipset, supporting Intel six-core processors i7-980X, 6 GB, and USB 3.0 and SATA (6GB/s(ZOMG!:))) for the fastest data transmission available to consumers.

You can pick these up for about… $432.51 (at the time of printing) Phew… thats a bit much for a motherboard. But really it does come with some nice features. All you need then is a video card, ram and a cpu and your set to go. And with the cheap prices of video cards at the moment, you could actually run SLI / Crossfire quite easily on this board as it totally supports it!

Whats the difference between Micro ATX and Mini ITX?

This one caught me out once, Please note that it is not a fun experience when you byt a MicroATX board and try and fit it into a MiniATX Case. you can however do it the other way around, but still just check that both the motherboard and case are the correct sizes, or otherwize your in for a major headache ;) .

Here is the “official” specs of…

Micro ATX

microATX, also known as µATX (sometimes transliterated as mATX[1] or uATX[2][3] on Internet forums) is a standard for motherboards that was introduced in December of 1997.[4] The maximum size of a microATX motherboard is 244 mm x 244 mm (9.6 inches x 9.6 inches), but some microATX boards can be as small as 171.45 mm x 171.45 mm (6.75 inches x 6.75 inches)[5]. The standard ATX size is 25% longer, at 305 mm × 244 mm (12″ wide x 9.6″ deep). via.

Vs

Mini ITX

Mini-ITX is a 17 x 17 cm (or 6.7 x 6.7 inches) low-power motherboard form factor developed by VIA Technologies[1]. Mini-ITX is slightly smaller than microATX. Mini-ITX boards can often be passively cooled due to their low power consumption architecture, which makes them useful for home theater PC systems, where fan noise can detract from the cinema experience. Beside that specific application, they are commonly used in small form factor (SFF) computer systems. The four mounting holes in a mini-ITX board line up with four of the holes in ATX-specification motherboards, and the locations of the backplate and expansion slot are the same (though one of the holes used was optional in earlier versions of the ATX spec). Mini-ITX boards can therefore often be used in cases designed for ATX, micro-ATX and other ATX variants if desired. via.

In summary:

Mini ITX = 17 x 17cm (or 6.7 x 6.7 inches)

Micro ATX = (the bigger one) = From: 171.45 mm x 171.45 (6.75 inches x 6.75 inches) to 305 mm × 244 mm (12″ wide x 9.6″ deep).

Small Formfactor MicroATX Case Round-Up

So what are we going to put this tasty motherboard in? well i personally prefed the Lan-Li Micro ATX Cases, there just slick. but here are some of the options available.

The Sugo SG07, with a size that slots in between the venerable SG01 Micro-ATX SFF case from 2005 and the SG05, a powerful Mini-ITX case released in 2009, was designed to take the Mini-ITX platform to a whole new level. It is twice as powerful as the SG05 but only 37% bigger. Its custom 600W power supply, which is rated up to 50?with 80 PLUS Bronze level efficiency and single +12V rail, was carefully chosen and optimized for SG07. Exhaustive testing was conducted to create unique VGA fan duct and exhaust vents that enable SG07 to not only accommodate the longest consumer graphics cards physically (up to 12.2 inches/310mm) but also capable of supporting graphics thermal profile of up to 400W through overclocking. For the CPU and motherboard area, a record-breaking use of 180mm fan (bigger than the Mini-ITX motherboard!) with vortex generating design was utilized to provide possibility of fanless CPU cooling of up to 95W (via CPU cooler such as SilverStone’s NT06-E). But despite having tremendous amount of cooling performance, the SG07 is easy to maintain as well. It employs positive pressure layout with all intake areas fitted with removable filters so dust will not accumulate inside. If the goal is to make the ultimate Mini-ITX system, the SG07 is hard to beat. via here.

Looks to be only available at this time in NZ, but they can ship to pretty much anywhere. Just makes the price tag of, $365 a little much…

New Screen Announced for the GPad

I just dont know if i want an iPad really. I got one of those mini 7 inch laptops, and just dont use it. Well it was useful when i was travelling, but now it usually just sits in the cupboard. Do i dare to get an iPad or a gPad when it comes out and risk leaving that on the shelf as well? Ah well the screen technology is cool!

google pad the gpad

Last week’s announcement, on the Download Squad blog, that HTC is building a tablet using Google’s Chrome operating system, and not Microsoft’s Windows 7 OS, shouldn’t be too surprising, given that the manufacturer made the NexusOne cell phone for Google, but it represents a shift for N-trig. The Israeli developer’s technology is integrated into Windows 7, and in a departure from policy the giant from Redmond, Washington has invested in N-trig. There’s no legal barrier to the “betrayal,” though, as Microsoft and N-trig never signed an exclusivity agreement.

The news about the N-trig-HTC collaboration was delivered to TheMarker via the Taiwanese firm, and N-trig declined to comment for this article.

So, what’s so great about multitouch? If you don’t know already, borrow your daughter’s iPhone or take a spin at a store that carries Apple varieties. It’s easy, convenient and very, very fun even on the relatively small screen of the phone-PDA. Just imagine the fun you can have whisking images and applications along the screen of a full-sized screen, not to mention rotating pictures with the twist of a finger and zooming in with a pincer motion.

For now the gPad is in the single-prototype stage, a closely guarded secret even from most N-trig employees. Let’s just hope, for their sake, that no one leaves it in a Ra’anana bar. The secrecy extends also to the details of the new tablet’s branding – will it bear the colorful logo of Google, or the staid one of HTC? – as well as of the agreements among the various companies that are involved. Even the November rollout date, one of the few known details, is subject to change.

This is an Awesome Screen! Not only is it bendy, but… AMOLED Vs Hammer

amo led screen by samsung omg bendy!

It really doesn’t take much to destroy a mobile telephone display. I have seen heaps of people with the issue of smashing a screen, just a slip of the hand and its on the ground, seems like it actually happens in slow motion. Well it seems that samsung have come up with a solution to your pain. this smashing screen! (pun intended… in a very lame way.)

Samsung are creating a good “unbreakable” AMOLED (the origin suggests it is not of the “super” range, regrettably) invinci-screen that needs to be within mass manufacturing by 2012.

How many manufacturers  actually promote their product as being unbreakable? (dont answer that, it could be heaps.. must do more research.. ;) ) Well anyway they recon this thing is unbreakable. You could probably still burn it but i guess that wouldn’t count.

Bored on the Weekend? Check out the Cable Sleeving Guide

So if you are bored one weekend… Very bored, you can always add sleeving to your PC case wiring, to make it look slick and neat. This can be a very tedious job, but rewarding at the end if you happen to have a window in your case and don’t want all the ugly wiring hanging out.

My recommendation, get a power supply with pre sleeved cables. ;) Or you can always just go to amazon and get a pack for about 10$.

Anyway here are some great guides on sleeving your cables:

Overclockers Cable Sleeving Guide

Well after a few requests I am going to post a rough guide to cable sleeving – now before you get too critical I did say rough .

Now before we get started there is one thing I MUST point out and that is that most power type cables tend to inter-twine – in other words the cable that is in the left most hole at one end may not be in the same position at the other end. I HIGHLY recommend that you take your time and do each cable one at a time (if you are grouping cables make sure you label them accordingly so you do not forget their order) because if you get the order incorrect when you go to power up the next time there is a very good chance you will see the magical black cloud!!

The two best sleeving types on the market current are MurderMod Sleeving and Clean Cut PET or CCPT which can be bought at GAMMODS

However I should mention that the sleeving used in this guide is all 1/8″ Techflex PET like this (due to having done this all a few months before the MurderMod sleeving was available)
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal…roducts_id=122

or for the Aussies
http://www.gammods.com.au/store/inde…ath=7_20_18_28

The majority of the heatshrink was 1/8″ as well.

again for the Aussies

First thing first and that is you need to decide what exactly do you want to sleeve. Are you going to just do the 24 pin cable? Or are you going to do the pcie, fan, molex and the whole shebang. Next step is to work out if you are going to be doing them individually or in groups. This then helps you work out what size sleeving is going to suit your needs. For individual power cable sleeving and fan sleeving I find that 1/8″ sleeving is perfect. But once you start moving into groups it all comes down to how many per sleeve you are trying to do.

Now there are many different types of sleeving out there as well as kits that give you different lengths/sizes with their appropriate sized heatshrinks as well. These are good but you may end up only using one size and the rest will just sit there. The other option is to buy it in the size that you want and the desired quantity. For sleeving in Aus its hard to go past gammods as they have a large range of sleeving in all sorts of sizes and colours as well as the heatshrink to go with it. Or the more expensive (but oh so worth it) option has arrived with the launch of the MurderMod site which now sells the mdpx sleeving (of Million Dollar PC fame). This sleeving is slightly thicker and is less likely to show the colour of the cable it is hiding. Again as mentioned previously there is no better sleeving available on the market at this time (My Opinion).

Now that you have selected your sleeving size/colour options you are going to need some tools to remove the pins from the various plugs.

For all non molex type plugs you can use tools like the ACRyan one below but I found that they have a tendency to break fairly easily. Actually the easiest thing to use is some standard staples….yes staples:ROTF:

I find that two together once bent into shape are a perfect fit for removing those pesky plugs and if you break them…simply get a couple more

Great Looking Case Project: TYR – Lian Li X1000

Am i a nerd if i find a computer case sexy?…

So this is my new build This one hopefully shouldn’t be too long winded, but I figured I’d make a worklog as I personally, haven’t seen many builds with this case before.

I will be doing a somewhat simple cpu and motherboard loop with a 280 rad situated at the front of the case.

Hardware:

Lian Li PC-X1000
i7 920
Asus Rampage II Extreme
6gb Kingston HyperX 2000Mhz C8
2x Nvidia GTX 480
Enermax Revolution 85+ 1050W MDPC-X Sleeved Aqua Blue and Black

Cooling:

EK Supreme HF Nickel Plexi CPU Block
EK Asus R2E Chipset and Mosfet Nickel Plexi Blocks
Koolance HX-CU1402V 2x140MM Rad
XSPC DDC or D5 Pump Bay Res

I picked up the case yesterday and my first thoughts were it’s so small yet so big! The build quality is amazing and it’s really a case like nothing I’ve seen or experienced before.

Not enough space free when installing apps on my iPhone

how annoying is it when you just want to install an app and it keeps giving you the message there is not enough space free to install this app!

Well there is a bit of a trick to it, well not so much a trick as a stupid feature of the iPhone OS. Now this isnt really much of an issue most of the time, unless you happen to be using some of the giant app’s out there like the tom tom europe or usa. These come in at about 1.8gig and 1.6 gig.

So basically, if you have freed up heaps of space on your phone and its still giving you the error, keep removing stuff. According to my research, you actually need about twice as much space free on the phone as the size of the app. so with a 1.8gig app you need about 3.6 gig. Now im not sure why this happens, maybe someone can enlighten me. I would be guessing its because apple decided that instead of using 1024 bits per byte, they rounded it off to 1000. And another reason may be that when copying the app to the phone it creates a temp copy of it and then moves it to the real file. So in reality you may even need more than twice the space on the phone for the app.

Anyway for those of you with giant 32 or 64 gig iphones i guess this isnt so much of an issue, but poor me with my 8 gig iphone, has to almost format it just to install one app!

Apple Iphone OS 4.0 the Unofficial Rumors

So here is what the rumor mill is producing about the Apple Iphone OS 4.0, and yes until thursday, or friday here in sydney they are all just rumours at the moment.

Word on the street is that the IPhone and IPad will finally get some multi-tasking action going on. so instead of having to switch it up between applications, you may even be able to run more than one at a time. I know massive deal! but there still a bit hazy on the details, saying that there will be a “few new ways” to run applications in the background.

They have added a multi touch system, so not only can you touch it once, but multiple times. Didn’t it already have one of these systems? isn’t pinching and sliding both of your fingers around the screen, multi? Anyway… maybe they made it a bit better.

iphone 4 point 0 screen shot os

Some people say that the IPhone OS is perfect. Really? Well that’s what i heard anyway, supposedly in this 4.0 release they have tweaked a few items to make it more “efficient”.

They have added a new system, or systems to allow easier syncing of calendars and contacts. Well that’s a good idea, i was just getting used to syncing my gmail contacts using the fangled method of weird settings that is currently in place. Hey it works, and its a hell of a lot better than having to manually enter all of my contacts i suppose.

Anyway about time they gave us a massive OS Upgrade on the IPhone. Puts on excited anticipation cap ready for 4.0!
