Originally Wilyagili Aboriginal land and their name for it was willy- ama said to also mean broken hill. (Not verified). (Appleton; 1992.
Description
A city about 22 km ESE of Silverton and about 6 km S by E of Sundown trig station. Proclaimed a city in 17/7/1907.
Origin
Named after broken silhoutte of a hill. First mining leases pegged 1883. Previously named Willyama-See GNB 984. Willyama proclaimed a town 12/2/1887. Broken Hill declared a municipality 22/9/1888. Broken Hill proclaimed a city on 17/7/1907. Also see Broken Hill 1883-1893 pages. 16 and 22.
